ROME INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
January 20-22 and 28-30
2015

January20
Tuesday, 11 in the morning until 16 in the afternoon
At the first meeting of January we are going to introduce students in the Roma
People story and condition by a   “walking” from the city centre, passing
through the historical areas where roma people had settle along the last 50
years in Rome. First of all the area of Mandrione next to the Acquedotto
Romano. Secondly Casilino 900, the bigger roma people settlement in Rome until
2010. Our guide is going to be Francesco Careri, professor of urban studies at
the University of Roma Tre, and member of Stalker On, a group of artists and
architects that work with roma people during the last fifteen years.

January 21
Wednesday, From 11 in the morning until 16 in the afternoon
We are going to met in our workshop area Tor Sapienza Neighbourhood in the east
periphery of Rome in order to know and understand how Roma people arrived here
and their current situation.  We are
going to walk around the area, in order to make students “enter” gradually in
the neghibourhood environment, talking with people in the streets, taking a
coffee with olders in the bar, and playing in the grounds with children.  We are going to organize a dinner in the squat
Metropoliz where some roma people families built their houses with people from
other countries. Our  based place for
work should be the Cultural Civic Centre Michele Testa, where we finish the
visit making “round circle actions”.  The
visit are going to be guided by Adriana Goni Mazzitelli anthropologist phd in
urban studies and researcher in multicultural issues in The University of Roma
Tre.

January 22 Thursday,
11 in the morning until 16 in the afternoon
We will meet Roma families visiting the Salviati Camp, and sharing a meal or a
coffe with them. Professor Marco Brazzoduro from La Sapienza University,
sociologist and expert in Roma issues,  is going to introduce us to the Roma people
issue and the history of the particular camps in the area.
After
that we are going to met at Centro Culturale Michele Testa with Natalia Agatti
and Matteo Loci members of the Laboratorio di Arte Civica which explain us the
work to done in the next week, the different groups tasks as well as the
materials we need to pick up.

January 27 Tuesday
We will arrange to follow roma families in their every day work as wastepickers
and normal life in Rome, wakening up at six o’clock in the morning, taking
children to school, going around in order to get trash, selling them in
informal markets or to the industries. This would be on one hand a
learner-based method of teaching and research, by dividing students in groups in
this ethnographic field work which allows them to understand by direct
experience in the streets how Roma people live the city, and how citizens
interact, or not, with them. On the other hand they are not going to be passive
at all, as they should pay particular attention to continue the collect of materials
that the LAC started in the months before (as just dolls, or just jackets, and
so on).

January 28 and 29
Wednesday and Thursday
With all these materials we are going to build an Art installation in the neighborhood
, that reflects on one hand their “invisible” life and work, as well as their
desires.  The other half of the work
would be create some interactive mechanisms by which neighborhood people could
let a “sign”, a “message”, and also their “desires” to answer to Roma people
and students Art work.

January Friday 30
The program will culminate in an exhibit of this “art work” at the Cultural Centre
Michele Testa. The exhibit will give us a chance to honor the work of everybody
(translated into several languages), while providing a space for Roma families,
and neighborhoods, inviting the major of the city, and the press, to mingle
together in a celebratory forum which put some essential questions about  the unjust city and the need of promote new
sharing identities.
